Day 60: Neighborhood Challenge
The Neighborhood Challenge takes everything your family has built in sixty days outside into the community! Today’s challenge uses your neighborhood as the course. Specific locations become athletic stations, familiar routes become measured distances, community landmarks become checkpoints. Move through the neighborhood as a team, complete a movement at each checkpoint, and finish together at a chosen landmark.
Set Up Your Route: Before leaving the house spend five minutes planning the route. Identify four to five checkpoints, landmarks at least one to two blocks apart. A mailbox, a tree, a bench, a corner, a school, a park entrance. Mark them on a phone map or draw a simple route on paper. At each checkpoint the team completes a movement before continuing. One different movement per checkpoint keeps it varied and connects today to everything the summer has built.
Today’s Workout: Neighborhood Challenge
What you need: A planned neighborhood route with four to five checkpoints. No equipment required.
Warm-Up: Walk to the end of the street and back together. 10 jumping jacks as a family in the front yard. Three slow deep breaths. You are ready.
The Movement Tour
Move as a team from checkpoint to checkpoint, walking, jogging, or running between each one depending on age and level. At each checkpoint complete the assigned movement together before continuing. No one moves on until everyone has finished. The team waits. That waiting is part of the challenge.
Checkpoint 1: 10 jumping jacks together in sync
Checkpoint 2: 5 frog hops each
Checkpoint 3: 30-second balance hold on one foot
Checkpoint 4: 10 A-skips each
Checkpoint 5: 5 jump squats each
Cool-Down: Walk home slowly from the finish landmark. Stretch in the front yard or driveway, hip flexors, hamstrings, calves. 20 seconds each.
Age Modifications
🟢 Little Movers: Ages 3–5 | 20–25 Minutes. Walk the route at their pace. Modify each checkpoint movement to match their level, 5 small hops instead of frog hops, 10-second balance hold with a hand available for support, 5 marching high knees instead of A-skips.
🟡 Kid Movers: Ages 6–8 | 22–25 Minutes. Walk and jog between checkpoints. Full checkpoint movements as written at their level.
🟠 Preteen Movers: Ages 9–12 | 25–30 Minutes. Jog between all checkpoints at a comfortable pace. Full checkpoint movements at their level. Add a personal challenge at each checkpoint, five more reps than the standard count or a slightly harder variation.
🟣 Teen Movers: Ages 13+ | 30–35 Minutes. Run between all checkpoints at a comfortable effort. Full checkpoint movements at hardest available level, jump squats, full A-skips, strict single-leg balance, full frog hops. Add one additional checkpoint: a 60-second plank hold at the midpoint of the route.
👨👩👧 Parent Bonus: Run every step alongside your child at their pace.
Did You Know?
Outdoor movement on familiar routes produces stronger feelings of accomplishment than indoor training. Research in environmental psychology has found that physical activity performed in outdoor environments, particularly familiar ones like a home neighborhood, produces higher feelings of accomplishment, greater sense of ownership over the training, and more positive emotional responses than the same activity performed indoors. Your neighborhood route today is not just a convenient course. It is the setting that will make Day 60 feel like the milestone it is.
Tomorrow is Day 61: Ultimate Backyard Tag Tournament. See you at 6am.
