Day 64: Target Practice Run
Welcome to Week 10 of the R2R Summer Movement Challenge. Week 10 is Precision and Coordination. A week focused on the technical athletic skills of accuracy, timing, and controlled movement. Not just going fast. Not just going far. Going precisely, at the right moment, to the right place.
Today’s challenge combines two of the most fundamental athletic skills in a single workout: running speed and throwing accuracy. The Target Practice Run is a circuit where you sprint to a station, throw at a target, and keep moving, but the number of additional reps required before moving on depends entirely on how accurately you throw. Precision is rewarded. Imprecision costs time and effort.
Why Precision Matters in Athletic Training
Most of the summer’s training has focused on qualities that can be measured in simple terms, how fast, how far, how many, how long. Precision is different. Precision is the ability to produce a specific outcome reliably, under conditions of physical exertion, within a defined margin of accuracy.
Every sport requires precision. A sprinter must hit the exchange zone in a relay. A field athlete must land within the landing sector. A basketball player must hit a target while fatigued. A soccer player must place a shot accurately after a full sprint. The ability to be precise when the body is working hard is a trainable skill and it is one of the skills that separates competent athletes from elite ones.
Set Up Your Stations
Before starting, set up three throwing stations along a running course. Each station has a target and a throwing object.
Station 1: A chalk circle on the ground, 3 feet in diameter, drawn 10 feet from the throwing line. Throwing object: a beanbag, a rolled-up sock, or a tennis ball.
Station 2: A bucket, a bowl, or a hula hoop laid flat. Throwing object: same as Station 1.
Station 3: A chalk line target, a straight line 5 feet long drawn on the ground. The throw must land on or within 6 inches of the line. Throwing object: same as Station 1.
The running course connects the stations. Sprint from one to the next, throw at each one, complete any penalty reps, continue.
Today’s Workout: Target Practice Run
What you need: Chalk for targets. A beanbag, sock, or tennis ball per person. A bucket or hula hoop for Station 2. A running course connecting the three stations.
Warm-Up: Jog easy around the full course twice. 10 arm circles each direction. 5 wrist circles each direction. 3 practice throws at Station 1 from a standing position
The Circuit
Sprint from the start to Station 1. Throw at the target. If the throw lands in the target, move immediately to Station 2. If the throw misses, 5 jumping jacks before throwing again. Continue until the target is hit, then sprint to Station 2.
At Station 2, same format. Hit the target, sprint to Station 3. Miss, 5 jumping jacks and throw again.
At Station 3, same format. Hit the target, sprint back to the start. Miss, 5 jumping jacks and throw again.
That is one full circuit. The fastest completion comes from accurate throws. The most jumping jacks come from imprecision. The penalty structure makes precision the most efficient strategy.
Complete 3 full circuits. Time each one. The improvement across three circuits as the throwing calibration improves is one of the most satisfying progressions of the entire summer challenge.
Cool-Down: Walk 2 minutes. Arm circles 10 each direction. Wrist stretch: extend arm forward palm up and gently press fingers down. 20 seconds each wrist.
Age Modifications
🟢 Little Movers. Ages 3–5. One station only, the chalk circle at Station 1, drawn larger, 5 feet in diameter, and placed closer, 5 feet from the throwing line. Three throws per visit regardless of accuracy, the target is the aim, not the requirement. Walk between stations rather than sprint. The penalty is replaced with a celebration! Two full circuits.
🟡 Kid Movers. Ages 6–8. All three stations with the penalty structure simplified, 3 jumping jacks per miss rather than 5. Jog between stations rather than sprint. Three full circuits.
🟠 Preteen Movers.Ages 9–12. Full circuit as written with full penalty structure. Sprint between all stations. Three timed circuits, compare times across the three attempts. The improvement between Circuit 1 and Circuit 3 is a direct measure of how quickly throwing calibration adjusts to running fatigue.
🟣 Teen Movers. Ages 13+. Full circuit as written. Add a difficulty layer to Station 3, the throw must be made with the non-dominant hand. This resets the calibration completely and requires genuine focus on accuracy mechanics rather than muscle memory. Four circuits rather than three. Time all four and track whether non-dominant hand accuracy improves across circuits the same way dominant hand accuracy did.
👨👩👧 Parent Bonus. Full circuit as written. Your specific challenge: at Station 2 throw while maintaining a one-foot balance, stand on one foot, throw, land the target. The combination of balance and throwing accuracy under physical exertion is a genuinely difficult dual-demand task. If the one-foot throw is too destabilizing, throw from a split stance instead, one foot forward, one back, no lateral stability available.
Did You Know?
Throwing accuracy degrades under physical fatigue in ways that reveal the precision limits of athletic training. Research in motor control science has found that throwing accuracy under physical fatigue is significantly harder to maintain than throwing accuracy at rest and that the degree of degradation varies meaningfully between trained and untrained individuals. Athletes who regularly practice precision tasks under fatigue show significantly smaller accuracy degradation than those who only practice precision at rest. Today’s circuit (throwing after sprinting) is training exactly this fatigue-resistant precision. The jumping jack penalty for misses is not punishment. It is the mechanism that makes fatigue-resistant precision the adaptive outcome.
